Fives Landis  Designing today the grinding solutions of the future

Company History

On the site of the existing UK factory there has been a manufacturing facility for approximately 200 years. It was started by the Barrett family, and until 1932 it was the home of ironfounders, wheelwrights, millwrights and general engineers serving the growing textile industry of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

In 1932, under the name of John Lund Limited (Trade Mark "Precimax"), the Company turned to the manufacture of Precision Grinding Machines. This business developed and flourished, with customers world wide and, in 1958, was acquired by Landis Tool Company of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, USA - a company also with a long history of machine tool manufacture going back to 1897.

In 1968 the Landis Group became part of Litton Industries Incorporated, of Beverly Hills, California, USA. Landis Lund Limited continued to trade under that name until July 1985 when, for consolidation reasons, it became a division of a newly incorporated UK Holding Company called Litton UK Limited.

In 1994 Litton Industries consolidated its commercial businesses into the newly formed separate Company - Western Atlas.

Throughout these changes, we continued to design and manufacture high quality Grinding Machines for the World's automotive industry.

In 1995 Landis acquired Cranfield Precision Engineering Limited, a Company with a global reputation for the design and manufacture of Ultra-High Precision special purpose machine tools.

In 1997 Western Atlas consolidated its Industrial businesses into the newly formed separate Company, Unova.

Over the last decade, the Company has made very substantial investments in Plant, Equipment, Research and Development and, most importantly, people.

Training of young people to eventually take their place in the successful continuation of our Company, and training of our customers is given high priority.

In December 2005, Fives acquired the world-wide Landis Grinding Systems business from UNOVA, Inc.

Fives is headquartered in Paris, France and is an industrial engineering group of international scope. It designs and manufacturers capital equipment mainly for the automotive, aluminium, steel and cement industries.

With total revenues approaching €1.5 Billion, Fives is dedicated to growing its product offerings and services to the global automotive sector through its subsidiaries in the Cinetic Industries group. The addition of Landis Grinding Systems represents significant opportunities for synergy that will benefit our mutual customers.
